31 Jan 2009

So, I'm crashing today. I'm posting thanks to DJ bringing his laptop home. I'm snuggled in my bed laying on a heating pad. Last night we watched a couple of episodes of Monk on Hulu. Love it! Still one episode to go to be "caught up". DJ is off helping Jared today - then he goes to work later this afternoon. Won't be seeing much of him :( My girls are doing a great job of taking care of me. Eggs for breakfast with cocoa. Read the newspaper...etc.

Hope your weekend is great!

29 Jan 2009

Happy Thursday! I have to hurry - I'm making dinner for another family tonight and need to get it done. Still - wanted to put something on today.

In my mail, I came across a coupon for www.ediblearrangements.com Love the idea - I'm thinking of doing it myself (well DJ and I) for our girls for Valentines Morning. Great breakfast idea :) Had to mention it....

I've subscribed to three or four new blogs in the past few days. Really interesting stuff...
http://www.scotthyoung.com/blog/
http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/
http://babyloveletters.typepad.com/baby_love_letters/

Just wanted to put those on in case it's something any of you would be interested in. There is a great language link on the four hour work week - referenced on the scotthyoung page. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Just finished reading the Secret Life of Bees - not sure that I really liked it - a bit of language, etc. I did read it all, though. I started The Time Thief (second in a series) last night - not sure if I'm going to like it or not - but giving it a chance. Still so tired! Went back to bed after the morning commute - and slept til noon! I was really cold too - even laying on the heating pad! My girls enjoy snuggling me in my bed. They watch PBS kids while I sleep. It works :) Hopefully I can have a crash day - full crash - on Saturday. With my schedule getting busier I'm needing to go back to a crash day a week. Anyhoo.....

Hope things are exciting in your world. Oh- here's something fun I did.... http://beauty.ivillage.com/0,,9jlxfdd5,00.html
It's the makeover-o-matic! Although they didn't seem to save my look - it was a lot of fun to play with :) Kimball wants to play next....then DJ :) I told him I didn't think they had men's looks. I'll have to follow up on that and find something for him.

Have a great day!

Another gem I found today - although I would say a bit melodramatic...and I can't say I ever thought about lesbian women cycling together. That would be a nightmare for sure!

So today I've taken it mostly easy...and I'm working on Kimball's birthday present. Can't remember if I mentioned what I was planning on doing? Think charm bracelet meets PMS management training. On a monthly basis - with a charm each month for the various activities we do.

DJ needs to start working on Hinckley's - although if I know him he'll probably do the whole thing on Tuesday night (right before her birthday on Wednesday).

Well, the mailman is here - which is big excitement at our house. I better go if I want to get the mail myself. :) Have a great day!

Just got home from Church. A very busy day - led the music in Sacrament, did Primary Music, sang a solo for Young Womens, and did the Relief Society music too. I'm tired :) Tengo Swenyo :) Wanted to do a quick post, though. Yesterday was good - we even made it to the temple.

Hope all is well with you - I'll write more as I have time :)

23 Jan 2009

We decided to do the chalkboard on the one wall because they colored on it anyway. Really - that was the thinking. Hopefully it is big enough for them to get all their coloring out on.

So....about the Peanut Butter. As I buy things like this way in advance - my peanut butter has been sitting on the shelf for at least 2 months. That's why I'm not worried about eating it - I've been eating it all along the way and it's been fine. Really - a perk of food storage I think. I noticed I only have 2 big containers of it left - but I'm waiting on buying more until they figure out the salmonella stuff. That's my concession - wait to buy more :) Silly....but I really am hooked on the stuff! TMI - with all the crazy side effects of medicines I'm not sure I would know if I had a salmonella issue :( True! Just 2 more days on the prednisone!

So today we have a couple of little friends coming over. That should be lots of fun for the girls. I started working on the taxes yesterday and made some great progress. Now I'm just waiting for the last of the paperwork so I can finalize the numbers.

Can't really think of much else. A few things are up in the air right now - probably the same story at your house too. Hopefully everything will calm down soon :) We're looking forward to spring break in March. Already making plans :)

Here's a pic from yesterday. My little ones said - take a picture of us, Mom!

Have a great day!

22 Jan 2009

Still getting used to the 2009 :) We made it through yesterday and are on to today. Piano lessons this afternoon and an assembly at McKay's school this morning. She is the top student in her class for the quarter (but doesn't know yet). We're going to surprise her...hee, hee!

I was all set to put a pic on - but I can't find my camera this morning. Guess I'll have to do some tidying and see if it shows up. I really want to get a pic of McKay too....

Well - on to looking for it, I guess. Did anyone try the recipe?

I'm so enjoying Bryan's blog - always fun to read and insightful. It was also fun to hear about Reg's trip to Becky's house. Those pics look like so much fuN! Even when I don't comment, I always read to see what you're up to. Had to laugh at the Milk post from Kari :) Have a great day all!

What do you know? I found the camera. Here's a shot of the stairs - still some sheetrock to finish on the left - but check out the chalkboard on the right :) Have a great day!

21 Jan 2009

Sorry for the delay in posting. We've been doing well! Let's see - Monday was painting...I'll get a pic on soon - still a bit of touch up to do. It looks really neat, though. I also put up some insulation underneath the girls stairs (stapled it up) so it is a lot quieter down here. With all the paint spills on the stairs - I'm anxious for carpet to hide the stains :) That will have to wait a bit, though. Yesterday was back to school. I had the TV on while I napped in the morning and sort of listened to the inaguration. The little ones slept with me. Just extra tired....so looking forward to being off some meds - the side effects are yuky!

Today I'm getting ready for our Activity Days planning meeting tonight. Really gaining some focus on what my role should be in the Spanish Branch. Clarity is great! Basically it means less work for me - more for the other leaders to pick up and do. :)

That's about everything I think. I'm trying to catch up on some filing today. Things are really good - I will get pics on soon. Sunday went great, BTW - so funny because the stake music gal had planned to teach them My Eternal Family (in English). I had to tell her that we needed to learn it in Spanish - right before it was her turn. She did so awesome! It didn't ruffle her at all - and she doesn't speak Spanish. We had a great time and I think I'll call her if I ever need a sub! So nice to have people who can just roll with things :)

Anyway - I do have something for you today, almost forgot it:

I wanted to adjust the peanut butter ball recipe and add beans. I know it sounds weird - but think of the protein! Anyway - I got some made up yesterday and this is how I did it. The girls don't know the difference and are eagerly eating up the treats.

Peanut Butter Balls aka Quick Energy Pickups

1/2 quart chickpeas (don't know the ounces - sorry)
2 c. peanut butter
4 c. powdered sugar
3 c. powdered milk
3 c. chocolate chips
Ground up shredded wheat (or any other cereal or graham crackers, etc)

I can the chickpeas myself - but I imagine you could buy them pre-done at the store. They also go by the name of garbanzo beans. I just scooped them into my mixer and started it going. Added all the other ingredients except the shredded wheat and let it mix until it looked like cookie dough. Form into bite-size balls and roll in the shredded wheat. (I used my mixer to pulverize it). Makes about 2 cookie sheets worth of balls. Put them in the fridge to firm them up (or freeze them). Really tasty and you can feel good about eating some beans!

Yes - I know this has sugar - but the beans seem to help control the absorption of the sugar and lessen the "punch." We use the shredded wheat because we have a ton of cereal still - from the cereal sales and I'm always looking for new ways to use it. I was really pleased with how well the girls like the balls. I even have them in the freezer (below the fridge) so they can help themselves. Just wanted to share ;)

18 Jan 2009

Getting ready for church here.....got some visuals done for primary. Found a great site - www.jollyjenn.com just in case anyone is looking for something like this. Really saved my bacon this morning!

Well, aside from Branch Conference today and the unknown that brings - it's looking like a great day! Hope your day is great too!

Later!

16 Jan 2009

Good Morning people! I know you're out there - even if you're quiet. :) I got busy and started organizing the basement today. Really I was just looking for my special bungy cord - and I still haven't found it - but in the end things are much more organized and everything looks great! What a difference it makes!

I have so many little "found" jobs that I've been storing for DJ that I have no idea when he'll next get a rest ;) He seems to find the time, somehow....
I'm really excited to be making progress and there are a lot of plans for this weekend as far as the house goes. We're painting the stair hall! I've got to go get some magnetic chalkboard paint - it's going to be so fun for the girls!

And lest you think I'm overdoing - I'm going to let the girls do most of the painting. Really! Kimball is having a friend over to help on Monday...and I know the little ones will be right in there. Should be crazy fun. And since the stairs aren't carpeted - we don't have to worry about spills :)

Well, I don't want to lose my steam so I better keep going. Have a great day!

15 Jan 2009

My 600th Post! So exciting! I am taking it easy....really. I spent quite a bit of time sitting and reading yesterday. I think that's going to be a mainstay this year - reading. I'm in Simplexity now and while I'm enjoying it - it is a book you have to focus on. Not for the light reading....but very interesting. Talking about what is simple and what is complex....

I mentioned the no-knead bread a while ago - but I'll give you a bit more today. http://www.artisanbreadinfive.com/ - here's the blog that the author's have....
Barnes and Noble has the book: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Artisan-Bread-in-Five-Minutes-a-Day/Jeff-Hertzberg/e/9780312362911/?itm=1

It's really a book worth getting - tons of recipies and I just use the basic one. I'll put it on the family site :)

Feeling really productive today even though I haven't done much. I did make some muffins last night for breakfast this morning. Turned out OK - I used Jiffy corn bread mix and added black cherry jello and chocolate chips to it. The girls didn't like the texture....but the taste was good. I guess I'm just on a baking kick. I did the bread yesterday and made up 2 loaves. The extra dough went in my fruit drawer in the fridge (and fit). I have 2 drawers so I'm not really missing any space this way. Re-thinking what goes where has really helped me to find extra space in that fridge. Not that it's a small fridge - it just has it's challenges like everything else.

Well, today I really am not planning much. I've promised the girls chocolate bread (from the book) - so we're doing that and then I have piano lessons this afternoon. Should be a great day!

Have a great day wherever you are too!

14 Jan 2009

Had to laugh wryly at Sue's comment. Does she know me or what?!? So - now that I'm on the mend - I'm heading to the school. The librarian called to see if I was comming in soon - so I'm definately due to go...I've been missed ;)

Emailed Deseret Book with a game idea! We'll see what happens with that....if they don't want to make it, I'll make it for us anyway :) Really fun stuff!

Just generally enjoying feeling better. Amazing - the difference. You get sick gradually and don't realize how poorly you feel until you feel better. At least that's the case for me.

I'll try to get some pics on soon - just too much to do to fit it into today. I'm taking a spanish primary CD out to my car TODAY to start listening to over and over and get the songs down. It truly has begun!

Well, sorry I don't have more to tell. I'm thinking of making some bread - putting the no knead dough in one of my fridge drawers - crazy I know - but it will be convienient. Yes - directly in the drawer (after I clean it) - then I can just pull out dough anytime and bake it. We'll see if I get that going. Maybe I'll run and do it right now. But I will run slowly - don't want to hurt my tendons!

Take it easy! Make it a great day!

13 Jan 2009

Feeling better today.....trying to avoid exercise as the meds I'm on warn of tendon damage - in particular when combined with the other medicine I'm taking. Nice :) ANyway - It's so good to be feeling better!

Some new favorite things....I tried the new floss from my dentist yesterday - and I love it! It is Reach gentle gum care floride woven floss. Kind of like flossing with embroidery floss - (thick) - but it does a great job and I like the floride aftertaste. Just had to share ;)

I've been reading up a storm since I've been sick. I'm going to quick check Sharon's blog to see how she records her reading....hang on.....Ok - I thought it would be easier than that....Alas! You might just have to check out my reviews at goodreads. Here's a quick list of this year so far - The Mysterious Benedict Society, and the sequel to that...., The confessions of Mycroft Holmes (not really about Mycroft at all - skip it!), Malcom Gladwell's new book about success (very interesting! - What have you spent 10,000 hours doing?), A book about design - complicated doesn't make it good, and probably a couple of others I've forgot. I'm just starting - Simplexity. It has some subtitle that I can't remember and don't have at hand. I really do love to read!

What else? I cut Taylor's hair yesterday - still needs some tidying up. :) Kimball is getting older and older....but what else is new. I realized I need to sign McKay up for piano starting this fall as she will be turning 8. Half wondering if I should teach her myself - she is really into pleasing me right now - but I know that will pass.

Well, I guess that's about it. - I saw this great add in a magazine (House Beautiful) that McKay picked out for me at the library yesterday. I'll see if I can find it online....hold on again...Ok - here it is:
http://www.mohawkflooring.com/

I just love the rubix cube. I'm thinking of getting one to decorate with my favorite scrapbook papers. So fun to play with and no pressure to get it all back the way it was! Perfect!

Well, Still taking it easy from the comforts of my captain chair here. I'm off to finish a couple of other things. Have a great day!

12 Jan 2009

Another update....DJ's back at work. We're still really tired. I went to the doctor today and got 2 perscriptions - antibiotics and predinsone. So - good news - I avoided the shot. I'm really glad about that. The doctor says to be sure to let him know if things don't improve....too many big words for me to remember but it sounded like it could be serious if I don't get it cleared up.

I think we're going to make it! We'll take it slow for another couple of days and see....

Really can't think of anything else...can't think much. Thanks for the prayers and thoughts. We'll make it through this!

10 Jan 2009

Sorry to be missing in action! My cold has worsened and I will probably have to go to the doctor next week - ugh! DJ is also feeling poorly but the girls are all great. DJ and I are gearing up to go get some convienience foods so that we can weather this unusual health storm. We'll be fine - just going to take some time. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers. We're hunkered down in bed watching movies. It's a rough life :) Talking makes us cough so we keep that to a minimum. Just didn't want you to worry.

For those interested - my nose is hurting again! Crazy I know! It feels like I've been in a boxing match (or how I imagine that would feel). Tylenol helps.....but I will probably need a steroid shot next week (what it took to fix it last time). Isaac said it's probably some auto-immune response thing. Let me say - the last shot was the worst of my life! Seriously - and I've had 3 epidurals and 1 spinal block! Anyway - we'll keep you posted. Glad my network of needlephobes is out there commiserating with me. More when I can.....

7 Jan 2009

Good Morning! Got the Cd's done - and printed the tracks on the back of the little CD paper holder. Feeling pretty good about that. Still working on getting better. Coughing a lot....about out of meds - so I'm off to get more today. Several phone calls to make...etc.

Can't remember much else.....Alas! Activity Days tonight - at the Library. Should be fun! Well, too much to do to linger here. Have a great day wherever you are!

6 Jan 2009

Good Morning. Snowing again! So nice to be able to enjoy it from inside a toasty home, though! We had a bit of a scare yesterday. After I got home with N & A (Spanish friends) - N told me she smelled gas in the laundry room. I went to check and sure enough - it smelled like gas. I looked to see if I could turn it off - and was unable to figure it out outside. So I called DJ and asked him to come home - and for advice. He told me to go downstairs and turn off a valve down there. Turns out - that was to the furnace :( and didn't solve our problem. Keep in mind, we have a wood stove burning away in the living room! Anyway - I got something to block the door to the laundry area with and opened the back door to air it out. It kept on leaking until DJ got home and fixed it. My hero! No exploding house or anything! Turns out the shut off valve had cracked! Anyway - we're glad we're past that scare. Also - he instructed me in how to turn it off outside so now I know. :)

I'm busy making CD's for the Spanish primary today. With accompanying sleeves (with the tracks labeled in Spanish!) Feeling pretty good about things!

Well, I better get this finished. Also have cleanup etc to do. Have a great day!

5 Jan 2009

Good Snowy Morning here!~ I think it's getting worse - so I'm waiting to hear if we'll have an early release day :) It's especially important to pay attention as I drive two students and one employee. I was worried that it would be hard to get the girls back on schedule after late nights and later mornings - but everyone got up and going ok today. So glad!

I'm making chicken noodle soup again. Just right for a snowy day!

Well - I really should put more - but I'm heading to the dentist and have to get ready for a cleaning. Have a great day!

3 Jan 2008

Well, It's been a morning! I'm gearing up for Sharing Time tomorrow - getting my visuals ready. They are especially important with the language barrier. Had a primary board meeting this morning - in Spanish. We're all nervous about how this is going to work.

Thanks for the comments on my word...etc. It's a very calming word...:) Do any of you have a word for this year? Would you mind sharing it?

Well, I better get these visuals done - they won't cut and laminate themselves!

Friday, January 02, 2009

2 Jan 2009

Good Morning! I think I'm on the uphill...we'll see. I'm not pushing my biscuts. Wanted to let you know my word for the year - Moderation. Yep! With subheadings of the following:

The condition of the physical body can affect the spirit. That's why the Lord gave us the Word of Wisdom. He also said that we should retire to our beds early and arise early (see D&C 88:124), that we should not run faster than we have strength (see D&C 10:4), and that we should use moderation in all good things.

Rest and physical exercise are essential and a walk in the fresh air can refresh the spirit. Wholesome recreation is part of our religion and is a necessary change of pace; even its anticipation can lift the spirit.

President Joseph F. Smith said this of moderation: "The Saints should not be unwise, but rather understand what the will of the Lord is, and practice moderation in all things."

and finally - handwritten in: Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

That's right by my computer - hopefully the message sinks in :) Last year's word was Priority, just in case you wondered.

So I'm gearing up for all the various things I get to do this next week. Should be busy! But not too busy :) Well, that's about it....Except for one thing DJ requested I put on:

I should really put an after shot on as well. We just have the base left and no snow around it at all! Crazy fuN! Have a great day!

Oh - and Becky I totally know what you're talking about. I too have resisted the bluetooth - your experience encourages me. Star Trek is still regularly shown on various channels. Various versions that is.....

And Reg- looks like so much fun at your place! I wish some of mine had fallen asleep before Midnight (instead of being wide awake when DJ came in with them from the SB activity sometime around 1 am. and they woke me up with their noise!).

1 Jan 2009

Happy New Year! Just a quick post....I've had a terrible cold come on suddenly. That's why I wasn't on yesterday. Glad to hear I was missed ;) My family went to the New Year's Activity without me last night ;( - But I'm hoping to feel better soon! Not sure if I'm still on the downward slope or heading uphill yet. Called Chuck at midnight! That was fun!

Well - take it easy and I'll be back on soon!
