Question for today: Do you have a favorite author? Why? Who? Tell about your favorite books as a child...youth...adult.
It seems like I've answered a question similar to this already - But I'll answer anyway. I think my favorite author of fiction is Laurie King (Sherlock Holmes series) - I really enjoy her use of words and how well she can paint a word picture. That said, I enjoy many authors - that is the author I would pick, though, if she had a new book out and the other authors I like had new books out too - I would listen to her first. I am really excited about the new Harry Potter book comming out - that is going to be great!
As I child - I remember the stale smell of books - enjoying that smell as my mom would read to me. I enjoyed many authors growing up - Jean Plaidy, Victoria Holt, and Piers Anthony. There isn't much time nowadays to read - but I just started a book last night- Brother Brigham's Gold by Blaine and Brenton Yorgason. It is good so far - I'm hoping to read a little bit this afternoon.

Question: What do you remember about the day you were baptized?
I just have faint impressions of my baptism day (at age 8). I remember feeling a bit scared - unsure about things but excited at the same time. I remember after my dad immersed me in the water and I came up - how sad I was that I had to be baptized again - because my foot floated up and I needed to be completely under the water. But I was immersed again - and this time it was complete! I remember feeling so happy and clean! We believe that your sins are washed away when you are baptized - What a wonderful feeling!
Make it a great day!

Question for today: Do you have a favorite magazine? Describe it and the kinds of things you learn from it or enjoy about it.
I enjoy almost any magazine. Having said that - I've already read February's Ensign - I read it the day it came - cover to cover. It is wonderful and I encourage you to check it out - especially the story about the good samaritan parable. For my friends that aren't members - you can click on this link to see what I'm talking about: http://www.lds.org/gospellibrary/pdfmagazine/0,7779,592-6-1,00.html#
It's just been the last few months that I really started reading the whole Ensign. It really brings a nice spirit into my home and heart. I have figured out that I just tuck whatever magazine I want to read into a pocket in my purse and use those spare waiting minutes to read. It really helps! I also like to sneak the Readers Digest in before DJ gets to read it.
A couple of other favorites are: Real Simple which I don't normally purchase - but occassionally - other times I've read it at a restaurant on a date with DJ. I like the articles in it. I wish Scrapbook Answers was going to continue, but alas - it's not! I loved that it came with a disk of goodies! I also like Family Fun - with all the fun activities it suggests - though I don't usually make the fancy treats for the kids - too labor intensive! They have a web site that you can check out too! http://familyfun.go.com/
Have a great day! I'm going to make mine great!

Question: Do you like rain storms? Why? Why not? Do you have memories connected with rain?
I do like rain storms. I like to watch them from inside - drinking cocoa and wrapped up in a blanket. I don't think I have any memories connected with rain - if I change my mind, I'll update this. Once we got so much rain - that the rain was up to the level of the grass in the front. It was really comming down and the gutters couldn't keep up. But, as long as we don't have a flood, I don't mind the rain.

Since no other people in that category read this blog - I won't put anything about them - but I have wonderful memories of all my aunts and uncles.

The girls are busy today – getting into all my drawers. What fun they find in the ordinary items! My cell phone was not working this week, so DJ took it in and swapped it for another one. Unfortunately, he forgot to bring it home so I get one more day without my phone ;( It’s interesting how much we rely on things like this to add structure to our days!
It's a bit of a rough day here - so we're enjoying some movies. Hope your day is great!
Question for today: Tell about school – schools attended, special teachers, friends, classes, activities, humorous situations, achievements, etc.
This is another question that might have too much personal information in it – so I’ll answer it in my word document that keeps a record of all my blogs.
I will tell one story - just for fun..... I really hated bologna and that was what my mom bought and made sandwiches with for me. I didn't want to hurt her feelings that I didn't like my lunch - so I just wouldn't eat it. I remember a dog that sat watching for our bus to drive by - I would toss him my bologna sandwiches. He loved to see our bus! I remember having to be a bit sly about it because you weren't supposed to throw things from the bus. I don't think this went on too long - I probably got hungry after a while, so I decided to volunteer to make my own sandwiches and went with peanut butter and jam. That worked really well. And Yes - I have told my mom about the sandwiches - years after the fact, but she does know.

A couple of questions or points to explain. Grandma, about the shopping, you probably did take me, I just have a very swiss cheese memory - and I only had my memories to go on. I wish I could remember all the things we did together - because I know there is a lot I don't remember.
A three hour visiting teaching marathon is when you spend over an hour at each of two sister's homes then the rest of the time talking to your companion in the car afterward. I must be a better listener than I think. It's a once a month deal - so I just go along with it - the sisters really seem to want us to stay and visit. I think every month - maybe I'll try to shorten our visits, but it never seems to happen. I'll have to work on being more assertive!
Something interesting happened this morning - We have a neighbor that I had been friendly with. She doesn't have many contacts outside her home so she really latched onto me and had been to visit several times last year (before Halloween). I had checked on her about Monthly to make sure things were going well. We last saw her at Christmas time. This morning - at 7:30 she was on my doorstep with a jar of peanut butter in her hand. She apoligized for the earliness of the hour, and asked me for five dollars. I should mention she brought the peanut butter for us.
She had never asked for money before - but she's always been a bit eccentric. I was glad DJ hadn't gone to work yet. I was so surprised, I didn't know what to say. I hardly ever have cash in my purse, so I knew I would have to scrounge to find the money. Kimball had 2 dollars and DJ had 1 in his wallet, and I raided Mckay's piggy bank for the other two. She thanked us and promised to pay us back on Thursday. The money didn't worry me - I just thought it was rather strange. We didn't ask what it was for - didn't really want to know.
She left shortly after that.
Well, as a charater in a children's TV show would say "That's something you don't see everyday!"
On to the question of the day:
Write your testimony of life....marriage....the gospel.
This life is quite the experience, but I know that it gives us opportunities to grow. I don't often recognize these opportunities until I'm through them, but on the rare occasion I see them for what they are (in the midst of trial) the perspective really helps me to endure them. Our Relief Society lesson was Tragedy or Destiny last week, and I really liked how Pres. Kimball saw trials and hardships as necessary for our growth. I want to be a better person tomorrow than I am today, so I can expect that life will provide me experiences that will allow me to choose to be better. I'm glad to have this life to enjoy!
Marriage is one of the biggest challenges and blessings I have been given. It's wonderful to have someone so loving in my life, someone to share the journey with. It's difficult to communicate with him, at times though. I am conviced that it is worthwhile, whatever the challenge to try to grow closer as a couple. I enjoyed telling the story of how we met in an earlier post. I can see the hand of the Lord guiding us to each other - and I know that the times when it's difficult I can go to God and he will bless us to turn to each other.
I truly believe that we lived with our Heavenly Father (God) before we came to this earth. The best times in my life are when I have felt his love for me. I believe that we are here for a reason - not just by chance. I know that there's a reason we love and care about each other - friends, and family - and it's because we knew each other before and we will know each other after we die. What a blessing to have people we love around us to help us through these experiences. I believe that Jesus Christ died for our sins - enabling us to return to Heavenly Father if we accept him and follow his teachings. I believe that our loved ones that die are not lost, that they wait for us and that we will be with them again after this life. I am grateful for my membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I'm so glad that we have a prophet - President Hinckley - who continues to guide us. Last night we had a Family Home Evening Lesson on Joseph Smith - and I enjoyed sharing my testimony of his life and mission with my children. We read the Book of Mormon (almost) every night! I am so glad that my girls enjoy going to church and learning these truths that I've learned (and continue to learn). The gospel truly is the good news! Thanks for letting me share these things with you!

Describe a trip downtown as a youngster.
Growing up where I did, the nearest town was so small - it didn't really have a downtown. When we'd visit Grandma and Grandpa - we were more likely to have a trip downtown. I remember driving around town - not really doing much walking or anything. I think that's why I enjoy window-shopping and walking around downtown so much now. I remember paying attention to street names and enjoying my growing knowledge of the area. Kimball enjoys telling us what streets we drive on as we go to church. I just remembered - going through an underpass on the way to the Grandparents - there was a train crossing overhead - and listening for the honk that Dad would always do as we went through. He would tell us to listen for the train - and then honk (providing the train sound I guess). That was so fun!

Question: What personality traits do you admire most and why?
I wish I had longer to think about this - but I've always been one who liked to hurry through a test as fast as I could - thinking my first instinct was right.
I like friendly people - those who seem to make friends effortlessly. DJ can start up a conversation with just about anybody. I am OK at this - but it doesn't come natural - I push myself. I also admire those who are able to keep things to themselves. I worry that as I get older, I just get to be more of a gossip - so this is something I'm always trying to watch. Sometimes I succeed! I don't think I'm guilty of breaking any confidences - I can keep a secret. It seems like I'm more likely to be too talkative when I'm focused on myself. If I make the effort to just focus on someone else, ask them questions, etc - I talk a lot less. I had a cold several weeks ago that really helped me to be a better listener. I guess that's what I'm really trying to say - someone who listens more than they talk. Maybe along with this - I admire those with tact. Someone who can say something that could be taken badly - but they say it so well that it is well recieved. These are all associated with communication skills - so maybe that would be the overarching personality trait I admire.

Cory and the kids are comming over today. I needed a babysitter so I can go to the school for a little bit and she needs to burn some family movies. Like Kimball likes to say - A win-win! It is nice having them so close - not that we see each other all the time - but as frequently as we both like!
Question today: Tell the words of a song from your childhood. What memories does it bring?
I can think of a couple songs - Primary songs invariably because primary was a big part of my childhood. Popcorn Popping on the Apricot tree is a great one - but I don't associate it with many memories because It's such a part of my life now - Taylor loves that song and is always one step ahead on the actions - that girl knows what's comming!
I remember my mom having the radio on occasionally during the day and those great 70's songs. I learned to love Billy Joel - and he's still my favorite. I think the first song of his that I had memorized was "The Longest Time"
Oh, oh, oh, oh, For the longest time.
Oh, oh, oh, For the longest....
If you said goodbye to me tonight
there would still be music left to write.
What else could I do?
I'm so inspired by you.
That hasn't happened for the longest time.
Once I thought my innocence was gone.
Now I know that happiness goes on.
That's where you found me
when you put your arms around me.
I haven't been there for the longest time.
Oh, oh, oh, oh. For the longest time.
Oh, oh, oh. For the longest...
I'm that voice you're hearing in the hall.
And the greatest miracle of all
is how I need you
and how you needed me, too.
That hasn't happened for the longest time.
Maybe this won't last very long
but you feel so right and I could be wrong.
Maybe I've been hoping too hard but
I've gone this far and it's more than I hoped for.
Who knows how much further we'll go on.
Maybe I'll be sorry when you're gone.
I'll take my chances; I forgot how nice romance is
I haven't been there for the longest time.
I had second thoughts at the start.
I said to myself, "Hold onto your heart."
Now I know the woman that you are.
You're wonderful so far and it's more than I hoped for.
I don't care what consequence it brings.
I have been a fool for lesser things.
I want you so bad, I think you ought to know that
I intend to hold you for the longest time.
Oh, oh, oh, oh. For the longest time.
Oh, oh, oh. For the longest....
OK - just so you know, I didn't write it from memory, I have the sheet music. I don't know what memories it brings - I enjoyed singing along I remember. I think I dreamed of the love I would find someday and hoped to find someone who would sing me sappy songs like this (I also bought a guitar back in 2001 hoping he'd learn to play sappy songs for me- that didn't work either). With the perspective I have now, it seems that love is a daily decision - will I act with love towards those around me, rather than the sentiments expressed in this song. That doesn't mean I don't like to feel romanced - it's part of those thrilling bursts of speed expressed in this quote I love:
“Anyone who imagines that bliss [in marriage] is normal is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that he has been robbed.
“[The fact is] most putts don’t drop. Most beef is tough. Most children grow up to be just people. Most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration. Most jobs are more often dull than otherwise. …
“Life is like an old-time rail journey—delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed.
“The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride” (“Big Rock Candy Mountains,” Deseret News, 12 June 1973, A4).
Ah, for the dreams of youth! Anyway, I heard something somewhere that really touched me. It was that the most important love story for our children is our love story. It's what happens after the "and they lived happily ever after" - how and what keeps the love alive. We show our children how to be happy and why it's worthwhile. In the world of love shown in it's various forms on TV - we should be the REAL example our children look to.
Make some love in your world today!

Little update - I only rode the bike twice last week, but it was twice more than the previous week. All in all - the resolutions are going well!
My question for today: What are your favorites: colors, flower, foods, activites, hobbies?
That is tough for me because I haven't taken time to have a favorite for most of these things for several years. Life happens and you forget what you liked, who you were - you know? I hope you don't know, but I do. We'll see if I can come up with some answers - My favorite color is probably blue - I know it used to be and I do tend to like blue things. There are so many colors to like, though.....Flower would be Lilies but any flowers in my house are welcome to brighten my day. Food - I like lightly buttered popcorn with my special chicken seasoning on it - I am willing to share the recipie if you like :). Sounds strange, but that's what I like. Activities - date night has to be up there, along with cleaning the house (not that I like to do it - but it feels good when it's done), and watching movies. Hobbies - Scrapbooking - digital of course. I actually started some "paper' pages - don't know when those will get done - just had things I could put on them. I also like to read but enjoy it so much I forget to do those things I need to do and forget to be an attentive mom - so I do that only when I really have time (and it's a short book) - I like to keep a book in the bathroom for when I'm soaking in the tub.
Well, that wasn't too painful - It's just my answers for now - liable to change in time. Have a great day all!

Thanks for the great - Mother of the Year stories everyone! It helped my day!
My question today: What do you feel has been the most significant world event that has taken place during your lifetime and why?
My first thought is - Fall of the Berlin Wall. I know that would be DJ's answer - he is just old enough to have realized the change and potential that this showed. For me, I remember that event but more memorable is the Challenger Explosion. Maybe I was just at an impressionable age. It seemed to me that life was a bit riskier after seeing that happen - not really scared, probably just more realistic at an earlier age - there isn't always a happy ending. Recently, the Tsunami was a major event for me because it seemed to be a direct sign of the times - the water heaving itself beyond it's bounds. In this age of communicatons and news and internet, there seem to be many more "major" world stories than ever before. Maybe that's a significant event in and of itself.

Thanks Becky for reminding me about the flashing red - I had forgotten that story! It was my first and only ticket that I've gotten driving - for running a flashing red (I thought it just meant caution). Such a traumatic time! I think all the kids were crying (Bryan, Jeff, Tim, Traci, and Lori). I was almost crying too! The best part was when they asked for registration - and I opened the glove box to get it out and was pulling things out to find it - including a fire extinguisher that had a gun-like handle on it. The officer's hand went for his gun. It was a tense moment but passed quickly when he saw what I had. Memories.....
I have to write about the Costco trip! Kimball went with me because we needed to purchase some special "mature undergarments" as she hinted to her friend at school. That was an experience in and of itself - just made me feel old! We had fun stocking up on the dino-buddies that Costco has an unlimited $3.00 off coupon this month. That was good! Between those and milk I think we only filled up a quarter of the back space in the burbie. It was a surprise to discover that DJ had bought oil and a tow strap and stowed them in the back already! For those who like A Series of Unfortuate Events books - we have a lamp in our room that looks like a medusoid mycellium (or what we imagine it looks like) - so when we found Wasabi nuts at Target - we had to get a jar. You never know when you might need some Wasabi! For those who don't get this - it's OK - it just means we're a little bit nuts here!
Today has been crazy! I was resting (sleeping) in my chair in the living room and the girls were playing until Hinckley pulled the exercise bike over on top of her. I was frustrated that she had done that and not too concerned about her being hurt (natural consequences you know...) and just sat her on the couch. I glanced back at her a minute later and saw blood running down her face! EEEEKKK! She had cut her forhead. Poor girl! So I took a picture and emailed DJ and then my mom called so I emailed her too. Amazingly the bleeding stopped - those head wounds can take forever to get stopped. So we laid her down and got her bandaged up. It's not too wide - so I decided not to worry about getting it stitched or anything. Just really makes you feel like a good mom - so attentive to my kids needs! Oh! I almost forgot - in the midst of everything - Taylor found a spicy Shezwan chicken seasoning pack and bit into it! She was crying too - so I rinsed her mouth out and she quickly recovered. Can I handle a question today? I think so - here it is: Describe getting a Chrstimas tree with your family as a child...how did you decorate it...when did you put it up...etc?
I only remember one live tree growing up and I don't know when or where we got it. Mostly we had artificial (plastic kind) trees that Mom got out and we decorated. My memories of this aren't really clear. I remember we would put the same ornaments on year after year - adding to them the exchange ornaments that the cousins had sent us. I still have those ornaments of mine - and what fun it is to see them and feel those special feelings of memory as you handle them. We also put the lights on and I think we used to do tinsel too!
I don't think I"ll be able to nap any more today. That's probably a good thing.

Question for today: Tell about how, when and where you learned to drive....any memorable experiences?
I took drivers ed through the high school. It was a pretty non-eventful experience except for the time we had a cute boy drive in our group (he had swapped turns with one of our 'team'). I had worn some tight pants that ended up with a seam ripped out in the backside. I was really skinny in those days so you know they had to be tight. I was able to extricate myself without exposure and I don't think he knew what had happened - so it all ended well. Moral of the story - don't wear tight pants! There's a limit to what thread can do!
I did have an early driving story that was interesting. After I got my licence some friends and I were going out and I drove one group. After dropping off the first friend at her house, I proceeded to back out of her driveway - thinking the mailbox was on the same side of the road as her house - it was not and I ended up backing into a field (over a big sprinkler pipe). She got her uncle to pull me out with his truck (this was in the country) and I didn't damage either the vehicle or the pipe. I was driving Bruce & Sharon's old Pontiac Lemans. I loved driving that car. Many happy memories - even driving in snow was fun in that car! My last memory of the Lemans was having it at college - parked in back of the house I lived in and hearing someone's horn honking. That horn was so annoying - I couldn't imagine who was doing that. It honked for 1/2 hr before I figured out it was my horn and went out and pulled out a fuse to stop it. I was so embarrased!
I think I left it at Mom and Dad's after DJ and I got married - they had upcomming drivers.

It's Made by Mr Coffee and called a cocomotion. Very cute - and what a deal - to win!
I had a nice nap yesterday - thanks to the girls taking their nap.
My question for today is: What is a favorite family place to go with your husband/wife and kids?
I guess I'm thinking cocoaish. We have a restaurant we really like to go to ' Little Kitchen' where they serve bottomless hot cocoa. It's really a fun place. We decided we haven't had enough fun last year - so this year we're going to go more places - I hope to have a big list in a few months.
Have a great one!

My question today is: What is the most trying experience that ever happened to you?
In short, the pregnancy and birth of my last child. It's such a personal experience that I won't go into details further than that. Some experiences in life change you. This was one such experience.
Make it the best day possible - and take a nap if you can too!

My question for today is: What was a favorite place to go with your family when you were young?
The most memorable place that we went was to Grandma and Granpa's house. We were close to one set of grandparents so I use these words to refer to them as they were the only grandparents we interacted with. When I was young, they lived in about a half-hour away from us so we saw them often. I remember the old house on Rosewood. Then came the years working on the house on Canyon. I got to help in small ways with this project and many weekends would find us there. I remember sleepovers with Mimi at both homes. It was a fun place full of interesting items to explore.
Well, that's enough for now. Have a great day!

Funny thing about today - I was waffling about going to church. My stomach had calmed down, but my cold is still strong and I always have little aches. I talked myself into going - and it's a good thing because the Ward Chorister didn't show and I got asked to lead the music in Sacrament meeting. I was really glad I went the extra mile and washed my slightly greasy hair - even if it did take (what seemed like) forever to dry and style. It just isn't much fun looking bad in front of the whole congregation. I was a little weak from yesterday and didn't really get nervous until I got up on the little "step" they have for the chorister - then the panic hit me. I just smiled and led with one hand while holding onto the music stand with the other. The low point for me was when I realized the stand was shaking. I asked DJ later if he could tell I was nervous and he said no - so I was glad. I'm so grateful for the conducting class that Lorraine Wray held at her home when I was a teenager. Because of her, I can look at a hymn and know how to lead it. That's all the prep time I had today - a glance!
Anyway, on to the questions: Describe a "sound from your childhood. What was it? When did you hear it? What does it bring to mind?
The first sound that comes to mind is the sound of the country in the evening. The crickets chirping, the rustle of the grass, the slight breeze, and the cool feel it brought. Usually I heard this sound as I got ready to go to sleep each night. It was louder in the summer as the window was open. Just a soothing evening symphony. The other sound I think of is the dishwasher. I remember my mom reading stories to us - the smell of the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books and the sound of the dishwasher running, lulling me to sleep. I think she read after breakfast or it might have been lunch - my tummy was full at any rate. What a wonderful sound - the dishwasher. It still makes me sleepy - and even though my dishwasher is really quiet, if the kids are asleep I can still hear it run - and put me to sleep.
The second question for today: What are your father's best traits? His worst? The traits you share?
Ohhhhhh....I think I'm opening up a can of worms with this question. I'll try to make it gummy worms. My dad has always had ideas, dreams, and many plans for the future. At any point in time you can ask him what he's thinking about and it's bound to be something rather unusual. I think this is a good thing - and up until he finished school about a month ago I might have said it was his worst. Before that - all his ideas were just in his mind, he never followed through with them - out of practicallity, or whatever. I know it was a difficult thing to finish his degree, but it was something he had always dreamed of doing - and just for actually doing it I think it's been one of the greatest personal accomplisments of his life. I imagine that he will see many possibilities as much more attainable now.
One of the things that has been difficult for many of us who spent time with Dad the last few years is how he has lived "in his own world" in that he has been pre-occupied with many things: his calling, his schooling, his job. He hasn't had much time to turn that off and be with us - having fun. I know many are hoping that he will now have time to have fun, play games, go vacationing, and be a grandpa.
Traits we share: I like to think that I have similar powers of observation. That I can look at what's going on and understand undercurrents. Dad is really good at this - he also is very polite. He always knows how to react, or respond to someone new. I want to be like this - he's really good at making people feel comfortable. I'm very glad that he's my dad, and I know he loves me too! (like the song says) The trick with parents is establishing new patterns of relating, based on the old patterns, that support each other as our roles change.
Hope it was a good Sabbath!

My question today is: How do you feel about school?
Right now I'm glad I'm not in school - that's my first reaction. I was very tired of school when I finally graduated with a bachelor's degree in Psychology back in '98. Intellectually and practically, I think school is very important though and you should get as much schooling as possible. I'm considering going back to school - someday! I think a public education is espeically helpful in teaching one how to interact with the variety of people you're likely to meet in the "real world" (whatever that is). My children will attend (and Kimball currently attends) public school. I'm curious to see how my feelings about public school change as she gets into the higher grades. She sure has enjoyed her teachers and classes so far. I attended and graduated from public school. I'm grateful for all the options we have in schools, teachers, eduction in general!
My favorite teacher growing up was Mrs. Yamada - I don't remember what years I had her for a teacher (sometime between 1st and 3rd grade). She was always positive and encouraging - just as an elementary teacher should be! I remember thinking that we did some real fun projects in her class and she would tease us with the idea that we could fit in her suitcase for her upcomming trip to Hawaii (at Christmas). It was from her that I learned the Melikaliki maka song (I have no clue how it's supposed to be spelled - I didn't learn that!).
I was a biology major for most of my college time, but after discovering that I would have to retake Organic Chemistry, I decided to rethink my options and switched to Psychology - earning grades that landed me on the dean's list for the last 3 semesters! I'm not sure what I would take if/when I go back - maybe some organizational psychology. I've even considered getting my teaching endorsement. Right now I enjoy just being a book-smart mom! I hope that motherhood has taught me some practical knowledge as well.

The girls have enjoyed the new rig! I'm still getting accustomed to it. I'm curious to see what gas-mileage we will get. The tank is definately bigger - I'm not sure how many gallons - I think it's 40? If not - it's close. This is our thinking on it - First, we like to be able to adventure as a family - and needed something big enough for us all to enjoy it. Even a jeep cherokee doesn't have enough seats. The van didn't get fabulous gas mileage as it was either. If the mileage turns out to be really crazy - I probably will be conservative and cut down on my driving (like I get out a lot anyway). Looking at vehicles to fit 4 or more kids - you are not looking at something that is going to get incredible mileage (anything above 30 I'd say). I'll keep you posted on the numbers.
What do you think of my "glamor shot" to the right? I wanted a picture that didn't really look like me - did I succeed? Below that is the comic that inspired this blog title. I'll probably change these features from time to time - how fun is it that you can do that?
My question today: What is your favorite book? What do books mean to you?
Let me go check my bookshelf.....I am stumped! I don't really have a favorite book. In fact, I usually have a hard time reading a book more than once - but now that my memory is impaired, I can read/watch things seveal times and still be surprised at the ending! I have authors I like to read - Laurie King (the Holmes series- not the Martenelli), the Lemony Snicket books, the Harry Potter series, and authors I remember reading years ago - Victoria Holt (The Pride of the Peacock) aka Phillipa Carr and Jean Plaidy. I just finished Northanger Abbey (sp?) by Jane Austen. These are entertainment books. Of course I like to read my scriptures! We all enjoy 'look books' that are mostly full of pictures and fun things to see. Then there are reference books that I enjoy.
Referrence books to me represent the real power of books - knowledge. I have a great book that tells me how to can anything - even how to make cheese. I don't refer to it often, but it is a comfort knowing that it's there if I need it. I have many other books in this category - craft books, recipe books, even old school books. I feel that if I have a book on something I don't really need to keep the information in my head - because it's in the book. I can't imagine a world without the written word, or without my knowing how to read.
Oh! I forgot to mention yesterday that I've been doing great with the snuggles - and the girls have really enjoyed me being more available for them. Must have been some inspiration!

My question for today is: Describe your first paying job. What was your salary? Your duties? What was your boss like?
Aside from babysitting jobs - and one harvest (potato harvest) spent picking rocks out of a field, My first job was at a coffee shop called the Donut Hole. My boss was named Barb - and she was a tough cookie. I don't remember offhand how old I was - old enough I guess. I made minimum wage plus tips - it seems like it was somewhere around $4.25/hr. Not sure on the number....I was a waitress who made coffee, cleaned the floor and counter/donut display, warmed and frosted the donuts, did dishes and used a cash register. I remember being left in charge (alone) during slow times. It was very different from anything I was accustomed to - but I did well - for the short time she was able to employ me. I don't think the business was very successful - it closed shortly after my employment ended.
Well - that wasn't too tough! My journal jar looks far too full - I guess I have all year to empty it :) Thanks for your encouragement! It is nice to be able to get "reaquainted" with those you don't see often.

Jan 1 2007
We had a family lunch at Dan and Kayes. Kaye is doing great - taking it easy and getting plenty of rest. With only a couple of weeks left to recover from the surgery before heading back to work - she's trying to get what she can done. On a side note- DJ and I snuck away to go pick up a Suburban we're thinking about buying. He's taking it to the mechanic tomorrow to make sure that it's the deal he thinks it is. Just thinking about all of us being able to adventure together and be comfortable sounds so nice to me.
So - I've thought of some resolutions - 1. I resolve to sleep more of the year away - meaning getting to bed at a more resonable time, and sleeping instead of fretting over troubles. 2. I resolve to exercise more this year - not just chasing after my kids either. Any number bigger than zero is more :) 3. I resolve to answer one of my "journal jar" questions with my blogs - unless it's too personal then I'll just answer it in a word document. 4. I resolve to love my kids more - and snuggle each of them at least once a day. 5. I resolve to make no more resolutions - this will be plenty.
My question for today is: (ok - I admit it's the third one I drew out - I just am not ready to answer the first two) What do you think about television?
I have heard lots of opinions on TV - even read a book about someone's opinion of TV. I think that it can be a valuable tool if used wisely. At times in my life, I have not been able to do very much - especially when I was expecting Taylor. I wasn't eating enough calories to mantain my weight - even with sitting in a chair the majority of the day. As I lost muscle - I relied on the TV for distraction and entertainment for my children. It was heaven-sent.
There is BYU TV and some other programming that is what I call "positive" and a lot of programming that is "neutral" and programming that is "negative". The trick is to figure out what is most uplifting and inspiring to you - and use that for that purpose. I find that media in general (print, music, TV, etc) can affect my mood more than many other things. I try to remember this when I'm feeling "low" and use it to my advantage.
At our house we currently have satellite tv with Tivo and I really enjoy it. I can watch uplifting, educational programs when it suits me. I can fast-forward commercials. And I can have an episode of Dora for the girls when they really need some distraction (just before dinner). During the day - we generally don't have the TV on - we stay busy doing other things - but every couple of weeks we'll have a special TV day where we just enjoy snugglies and shows.
That's what I think.
